Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 25, 2026
Bowline ("we", "our", "the app") is an app that helps you remember details about the people in your life. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
TL;DR
- The data you put into Bowline (people, notes, dates, gifts, key facts) is stored in your private account.
- We use the Anthropic Claude API to generate summaries, fact extractions, and reach-out suggestions from your notes. Note text is sent to Anthropic only to produce these features.
- We do not sell your data, share it with advertisers, or use it to train AI models.
- You can delete your account and all associated data from inside the app at any time.
Data we collect
Account data
- Email address and password (handled by our auth provider, Supabase). Used to sign you in and identify your data.
- Display name, default contact frequency, and notification preferences.
Content you create
- People profiles, notes, important dates, key facts, gifts, and groups.
- Voice recordings used for note dictation are transcribed on-device using Apple's Speech framework. The audio itself is not uploaded; only the transcribed text is saved to your account.
Contacts (optional)
If you grant Contacts permission during onboarding, the app reads names, phone numbers, emails, and birthdays from contacts you explicitly select. Only the contacts you tap "Add" on are imported. Contacts you don't select are never sent off device.
Device and notification data
- A device push token (if you enable notifications) so we can send reminders and reach-out nudges.
- Standard crash and diagnostic logs in our infrastructure (no advertising identifiers, no third-party analytics SDKs).
How AI is used
Bowline uses the Anthropic Claude API to:
- Extract durable "key facts" from notes you save.
- Generate short summaries of your recent interactions with a person.
- Suggest a sentence or two for what to say when reaching out.
When these features run, the relevant note text and the person's name are sent to Anthropic's API through our backend. Per Anthropic's API terms, this content is not used to train Anthropic's models. AI output is generated by a model and may be inaccurate; you can edit or delete any AI-generated content, and you can flag it inside the app.
How your data is stored
- Application data is stored in a Supabase PostgreSQL database with row-level security so that only your authenticated session can read or write your rows.
- Backups are encrypted at rest.
- Your data is hosted in the United States.
Sharing
We do not sell your data. We share it only with the processors needed to run the app:
- Supabase — database, authentication, file storage, edge functions.
- Anthropic — generative AI for the features described above.
- Apple — APNs for delivering push notifications.
Your rights and choices
- Access and edit — every piece of content you create can be edited or deleted from inside the app.
- Account deletion — Settings → Delete account permanently removes your account and cascades the deletion of all associated data (people, notes, dates, key facts, gifts, groups, reminders).
- Contacts permission — revocable any time in iOS Settings.
- Microphone and Speech — revocable any time in iOS Settings; the app will fall back to typed notes.
- Notifications — revocable any time in iOS Settings.
Children
Bowline is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when material changes occur and indicate the new "Last updated" date.
